"Building a Custom PC is about as complicated as building a 15 piece jigsaw puzzle... Well, sort of."

Ok, I'll be honest. A 15 piece jigsaw puzzle might be easier and quicker to put together than a PC but the idea is about right. Once you have purchased all the pieces for your new compy it is simply a matter of plugging all the pieces together, and yes, there really are only about 15. Luckily for us, almost all are color-coordinated to some extent and the components only fit into the proper slot. So, if you follow the Custom Computer Tutorial from this site, you will have no trouble at all creating your very own, hand-crafted PC. Below are some Questions to consider before you jump into the buying process.

• What is this 'Custom Computer' you're talking about?

Well, pretty much just that. Surely you've seen commercials on TV or other internet sites for Dell or Gateway computers for $500 or so. They come pre-assembled in fancy cardboard boxes (some look like Holstein Cows). These are a One-Size-Fits-All computer (like a Wal-Mart Suit Coat). For those of you who have ever had a Tailor-Made Outfit you know that when something fits, Oh does it feel good. PC's are the same. But putting together a PC is much easier than Tailoring a Suit.

• A 'Custom Computer' eh? Who has one of those?

Chances are if you know a PC gamer (the kind that go to LAN parties for days on end :) then you know someone with a custom computer! Sure, for best gaming performance it is popular to make your own gaming rig (plus you get to brag), but you don't have to be a gamer to enjoy the benefits of a Custom PC, you don't even have to be a Computer Geek/Nerd. In fact it is surprisingly simple.

• Aren't you going to charge me for this information?

LOL! It was never an intention of mine to require payment for this information, but someone asked me this and I litteraly laughed-out-loud. Ok, it was more of a snicker-out-loud, but SOL is already claimed as an acronym.

• Who are you and why should I listen to you?

I am Daniel, and I am smart. Hee Hee, a smart-alek maybe. Actually, I've never owned a desktop from Dell, IBM, Compaq or any other. Oh, wait. I did have a C64, but I'm not sure that counts? Anyway, I've made many, many computers from scratch and have helped answer the questions of many of my friends. The picture to the right is one of my creations. A computer made in a Military Ammunition container (Ammobox). I use it as a fileserver on my current home network. Though, I can never resist taking to LAN parties when I go ;)

• 'Custom' usually means 'More-expensive' right?

Sometimes, yes. And Custom Computers aren't an exception. Here are a few examples:

•I've made a low end computer for under $200. It runs the net and word processes just fine. No good gaming on it though.
•I've made a low midrange gaming computer for under $500. It plays World of Warcraft surpisingly smooth (1024x768, all goodies, at 60Fps), it runs CS, Q3, WC3, etc. at full graphics.
•I've know people who've spent upward of $6000 on a gaming machine!!

So yes, depending on the Customizing they certainly can cost more, but can also cost much less. Usually you get a computer that is easy to work on, fits your needs, and plus you have a better understanding of what could go wrong with it!
